Obituary

Cassandra Hodges Yongue passed on Wednesday night, November 29, 2006. She was born in Fayetteville, NC, on January 27, 1946. She was the middle and third child born to Samuel and Virginia Hodges. Her family moved to Greensboro when she was three years old. She was educated in the Greensboro Public Schools and graduated from James B. Dudley High School in 1964. She then matriculated at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she earned both her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education (1968) and her Masters Degree in Education (1972). She also earned her certification as a Reading Recovery Teacher Leader from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington during the 1993-94 academic year.

Cassandra had a wide range of teaching experiences, both as a classroom teacher and reading specialist. She taught out of state in Eastchester, NY and Fairfax County, VA and within North Carolina in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools, the Greensboro Public Schools, the Durham Public Schools, with her last teaching assignment being with the Orange County Schools where she served as the system’s first full time Reading Recovery teacher leader.

Cassandra’s earliest church membership was with St. James Presbyterian Church in Greensboro and then with Covenant Presbyterian Church in Durham. In 2004, she was baptized by immersion and joined North East Baptist Church of Durham. At North East, she was an active participant in the JOY Book Group, the Married Couples Ministry, the Married Couples Sunday School Class, The Refined Seniors Ministry, and was Facilitator of the North East Tutorial Ministry before her health prevented her from continuing to serve in that capacity. During her membership in the Presbyterian churches, Cassandra loved working with the children and youth in the church and reached out to those in need. She was especially proud of directing the Cub Scout program and having the opportunity to serve as a Sunday School teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School, Assistant Youth Director, Greeter, Coordinator of the Back-to-School Campus Ministry, Member of Robert Smalls Mariners’ Couples Club, and as an ordained deacon.

Cassandra looked forward to the many trips her family made to her aunt’s home and the family farm in Hope Mills, NC. After reading and seeing Arthur Haley’s Roots, she was inspired and executed plans for the Hodges Family reunion in Fayetteville, NC and the Kyle Family reunion in Durham, NC.

Cassandra was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and once held membership and affiliations with the Quettes, Jack and Jill of America, the Reading Recovery Council of North America, the International Reading Association, the National Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa, and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was awarded an “Outstanding Service Award” by Phi Delta Kappa in 1998.

Cassandra’s passions included traveling, cooking, reading, scrapbooking, family events, and sports. One winter, she spent an adventurous five-weeks traveling with her husband to France, Sierra Leone, Egypt, Greece, and Italy and later a four-week jaunt with her sister to New Zealand and Australia. This year, for her 60th Birthday, she celebrated with 17 of her closest friends in Paradise Island, Bahamas. Her favorite TV channel was the Food Network and many of the dishes she observed being prepared were replicated for her family. She spent countless hours sharing books with her students while participating and maintaining her interests in adult reading groups. Two of her most memorable scrapbooks projects were biographical scrapbooks she prepared as college graduation gifts for her daughter and son. Her favorite sports were basketball and tennis. She always considered it an honor to have seen Althea Gibson play professional matches during her youth and enjoyed Atlantic Coast Conference basketball immensely.

Cassandra is survived by her husband of 37 years, Joseph Henry Yongue, I; daughter Christina Yongue Hardy (Donnell); son Joseph Henry Yongue, II (Adrian); mother Virginia K. Hodges; brothers Samuel Jasper Hodges, III (Frances); Reginald K. Hodges (Celeste); sister Vanessa G. Hodges; brothers Lionel K. Hodges, I (Margaret); Japhet Nkonge (Igoki); Mother-in-law Johnsie Jenkins Yongue; sisters-in-law Alberta Y. Dease (Luther); Gloria Y. McClure (Donald, I); and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Forest Hills Blvd., Durham, NC 27707. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 5, 2006 at 1:00 pm at North East Baptist Church, located at 3204 Apex Highway, Durham, NC 27713.
